Meet Jennifer: an adventure-loving, family-focused, creative soul who joined the 40 Over 40 Project to celebrate herself and rewrite the narrative around aging, beauty, and visibility. In this deeply personal interview, she shares her motivations, the wisdom she’s gained through hardship, and why it’s time more women over 40 take up space—in their communities and in front of the camera.
1. What are 2-4 terms that describe you?
Family-centric, adventure seeker, creative soul, and altruistic.
2. Why was joining this project important to you?
Joining the 40 over 40 project was vital to me for several compelling reasons. I sought an empowering and transformative experience that would push me beyond the confines of my comfort zone. Society often places undue pressure on women to conform to unrealistic standards of age and beauty. My participation in this project was motivated by a desire to challenge and redefine the narrative surrounding what it means to be a woman beyond the age of 40. My aim in joining was not only to transform my own self-perception but also to inspire other women grappling with similar insecurities or apprehensions. By stepping out and embracing our bodies, we pave the way for change, not just in how we view ourselves, but in being seen and valued by others. I wanted to have a deeper sense of self-acceptance and love.
3. What perspective have you gained by overcoming hardships?
Throughout life, everyone faces various challenges and hardships. When you overcome these difficulties, you gain invaluable perspectives that can shape how you approach life moving forward. One significant insight I've acquired is a deep understanding of my resilience. Navigating through my difficulties has unveiled my capacity to confront challenges head-on, learn from them, and emerge stronger. These experiences have heightened my empathy. I've grown more compassionate and understanding toward others grappling with their battles, as I can empathize with their struggles and victories. My appreciation for life's blessings has deepened. This newly found perspective has made me more grateful for my support network, the opportunities, and life's simple joys. The hardships I've faced have taught me the importance of adaptability and flexibility in thought and action. They've underscored the necessity of being open to change and the ability to adjust my course when required. These challenges have also helped clarify what's genuinely important in life. This insight has prompted me to place a higher value on my family, relationships, passions, and personal growth, recognizing these as the sources of true happiness and fulfillment. The wisdom from overcoming adversity is not merely a reflection on past trials; it serves as a beacon for navigating future challenges. While each person's journey is distinct, the lessons learned from surmounting obstacles are a universal boon that enriches our character and life philosophy.
4. What advice would you give to other women or to a past version of yourself?
If I were to give advice to other women or to a past version of myself, I would say recognize the uniqueness of every individual’s journey, including your own. Understand that your worth is intrinsic, not determined by others’ validation or approval. You are wholesomely enough just the way you are. Embrace your uniqueness; everyone possesses a distinct combination of talents, interests, and viewpoints. Celebrate what sets you apart; your uniqueness is, in truth, your greatest strength. Do not fear standing out. Prioritizing self-care is also crucial. Attending to your physical, emotional, and mental well-being isn’t selfish; it’s fundamental. Life’s inevitable fluctuations require resilience. Cultivating this quality enables you to face challenges with serenity. Remember, it’s not about avoiding failure but learning and growing from it. Surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you. Your growth is amplified by the support and wisdom of those around you. Be an advocate for yourself and others. Learn to articulate your needs and defend your stance. Empower those without a voice and contribute positively to your surroundings. Lastly, remember that self-discovery and growth are continuous processes. Treat yourself with kindness, remain open to change, and trust in your journey. Every encounter, whether favorable or adverse, serves as a foundation for evolving into the most authentic version of yourself. Embrace and live your life to its fullest potential.
5. Why should more women over 40 celebrate themselves & be seen more in their communities and in the media?
Celebrating women over 40 and enhancing their visibility in communities and media is crucial for many reasons. Women over 40 constitute a significant segment of the global population, offering diverse experiences, stories, and viewpoints. Including them in media and community engagements ensures a more comprehensive representation of society, fostering inclusive and empathetic communities. Celebrating and showcasing the achievements, beauty, and contributions of women over 40 challenges stereotypes and combats ageism. It underscores that value and potential do not diminish with age. These women often carry a wealth of experience, resilience, and wisdom, nurtured through their varied roles in professional and personal realms. Heightening their visibility offers younger generations a spectrum of role models, showcasing that personal and professional growth persists at all life stages. Women over 40 play pivotal roles in the economy, both as consumers and workforce participants. Their visibility and recognition generate a positive feedback loop, empowering women, which, in turn, boosts their self-esteem and confidence. This empowerment encourages more women to step into leadership roles, chase their ambitions, and engage actively in their communities, enriching the social, cultural, and economic fabrics of society. Acknowledging the achievements and contributions of women over 40 can positively impact their mental and physical health. Feeling valued and visible can diminish stress, enhance mental health, and promote a more active, engaged lifestyle. Celebrating and heightening the visibility of women over 40 in communities and the media is a stride towards fostering a more inclusive, equitable, and vibrant society. It challenges outdated norms, uplifts economic and social contributions, and inspires future generations.
